Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle
No matter what your age, it’s important for all women to understand how their menstrual cycles work. It doesn’t matter if this is your first or last period. Knowing how your body works can better help you understand what to expect and whether or not you should seek medical assistance.
We’re all different, so you can expect your period will be unique as well!
Some of us have short cycles, while others are long. Some have light bleeding while others have it heavy. Maybe you fall in between. No matter what each month is like for you, it’s important to know what’s within normal limits.
Over time, your cycle may evolve. With each step in your life, expect normal changes in cycle patterns. Even PMS - Premenstrual Syndrome - can change overtime. Events such as pregnancy, birth, birth control, reproductive disorders, infections, and age can affect your cycle in different ways.
Educating Women
Expecting our doctors to be patient and sleuth out innocuous inconsistencies in how we describe our cycle is a bit of a stretch in today’s fast-paced world. Doctors don’t always have the means or time to educate each patient. When doctors spend on average less than fifteen minutes with a patient, diagnostics can be a tricky and often careless practice. At OvaTel, we know that the best way to defend against a system designed to get patients in and out quickly, is to provide education on women’s health which, in turn, allows each patient to take control.
We can aid the diagnostic process by doing our part in tracking our cycles.
The Importance of Cycle Tracking
When it comes to cycle tracking, most women let nature take its course (And time, and own schedule) without any notice. Its only when the topic of conception arises that they start marking up the calendar. While it may seem harmless enough, not tracking their cycle has proven to be dangerous for many women.
The importance lies in preventing devastating health issues over and above just infertility. Often times, illnesses such as ovarian cysts, endometriosis, fibroids, PCOS, and even some cancers can go unnoticed for years. This lets them sit and wreak havoc on a woman’s reproductive system and in some cases her entire body before starting treatment.
If you haven’t started tracking your cycle, you can start today. Our goal at OvaTel is to get all young women started on tracking their cycles early on. Treatment has advanced for many women’s health issues, but prevention is easily the least painful, least expensive and least stressful solution out there.
